Your main idea
The writer shares that not everyone loves ice cream, and connects this to the bigger idea that everyone has tasted something sweet.
Your writing
Did you know that some people do not love Ice cream? It's true! I am one of them. You might like Ice cream, but I usually eat it because I am hot, or for some other reason like sometimes I might just want to eat sweets. Other people might eat Ice cream for other reasons but even if you do not eat it, all of us have tasted sweet things before. So, this means that no matter how much money you have, everyone has tasted a sweet thing, whether it was candy or something else, we are the same.
Coachβs feedback
What you did great β¨
- I love how you started with a question to grab the reader's attention. That makes me want to keep reading!
- Your ending idea is powerful. Saying "we are the same" makes your whole piece feel like it has a real point.
Top 3 things to grow π±
- Capitalization
You wrote: βIce creamβ
When you write "ice cream" as a regular thing, not the special frozen dessert, wait β actually ice cream IS the dessert! The word "ice" and "cream" do not need capital letters unless they are at the start of a sentence.
Try: βice creamβ
- Sentence structure
You wrote: βYou might like Ice cream, but I usually eat it because I am hot, or for some other reason like sometimes I might just want to eat sweets.β
This sentence is doing too much in one go, so it is hard to follow. Try breaking one big idea into two shorter sentences. A Grade 4 reader should be able to follow without stopping.
Try: βYou might like ice cream, but I usually only eat it when I am hot. Sometimes I just want sweets, so I might pick something else.β
- Punctuation
You wrote: βwhether it was candy or something else, we are the same.β
When two ideas are joined with a comma and a word like "so," "and," or "but," we usually put a comma BEFORE that joining word, not after. This helps the reader pause in the right spot.
Try: βwhether it was candy or something else, we are all the same.β
Same ideas, just cleaner
Your coach cleaned it up β using your words and ideas.
Did you know that some people do not love ice cream? It is true! I am one of them. You might like ice cream, but I usually only eat it when I am hot. Sometimes I just want sweets, so I might pick something else. Other people might eat ice cream for other reasons. But even if you do not eat it, all of us have tasted sweet things before. So, no matter how much money you have, everyone has tasted something sweet. Whether it was candy or something else, we are all the same.
Try this practice π―
Take this long sentence and break it into two shorter sentences. Remember: one idea per sentence.
Rewrite this sentence into two shorter ones: "I usually eat ice cream when I am hot but sometimes I just want to eat sweets."
Show a sample answer
I usually eat ice cream when I am hot. But sometimes I just want to eat sweets.
Now try again in your own words βοΈ
Use the coachβs ideas, but write it like YOU would. This is the most important part!
